5 Benefits of Insulating Your Garage

Diana Reed • January 12, 2021
One of the many advantages of storing your vehicle in a garage, rather than parking it outside, is the ability to get into your vehicle without ever being exposed to the elements. Even if your garage is of the detached variety, a quick jaunt through the rain, wind, snow, or heat is much better than shivering (or sweltering) as you wait for your vehicle to attain a more comfortable temperature.

But if your garage is poorly insulated (or isn't insulated at all), it likely provides a much lesser level of protection from the elements than it could. Read on to learn more about five of the most notable benefits that can come from insulating your garage.

1. Climate Control

One of the biggest benefits that can come from installing insulation anywhere in your household is an improvement in the ability to maintain a consistent indoor temperature. Even if, like many homeowners, you opt not to heat or cool your garage by itself, surrounding it with dense insulation that traps interior heat can help it maintain a steady temperature year-round.

Attached garages can also absorb heat and cool air from the rest of your home, helping provide "climate-controllike" temperatures without raising your heating or cooling bills.

2. Sound Dampening

Even if you don't have a household garage band yourself, having insulation available to muffle the sounds coming from your garage can go a long way toward reducing extra noise in your household.

An uninsulated attached garage can provide a direct conduit for outside foot traffic or auto traffic noise to enter your home. Insulating your garage door, walls, and ceiling can dampen this noise, rendering your home a much quieter and more peaceful place.

Insulating your garage can also provide major benefits to the entire household if you or a member of your family has a noisy hobby. From woodworking to auto repair, hobbies that were previously audible to the entire neighborhood (not to mention your own family) will now fly under the radar.

Often, you won't even notice how noisy your neighborhood was until after you've taken steps to reduce this noise by installing insulation.

3. Energy Efficiency

Attached garages can be a major source of heat loss for many homes. If your summer and winter utility bills seem to be quite a bit higher than your neighbors', despite strict attention to your thermostat settings, it's possible that much of this hot and cold air is escaping to the outdoors through your garage.

By installing insulation that keeps heated air from easily traveling to your garage and then prevents it from escaping once it's in your garage, you'll often see an instant reduction in your energy bills. In some cases, this increased efficiency can even pay for the cost of the insulation within a year or two.

4. Improved Appearance

On its own, insulation isn't always attractive, whether it consists of thick fiberglass sheets, blow-in cotton batting, or spray foam that expands to fill empty spaces. But insulating your garage can give you the motivation you need to otherwise beautify this space, and in some cases, may improve the interior appearance of your garage all by itself.

5. Improved Home Value

Even if you don't have resale on the mind, it's never a bad idea to take steps that can improve your home's resale value while also improving its current appearance, form, or function. If you decide to insulate your garage for your own comfort or cost-savings, you'll likely find that this makes your home more marketable if or when you do decide to list it for sale.

While these insulation benefits can far outweigh any drawbacks, it's important to have new insulation professionally installed, especially if you don't have any prior experience with this type of project. Contact Insulation Removals for more information.
